Green Meeting Machine: Five Ways we are Sustaining the Center of Hospitality

Inside our concourse walls, sustainability is a key component happening at every event hosted at the Orange County Convention Center. From our solar arrays and in-house gardens to waste reduction and mobility, guests to the facility are involved in one of the most innovative, large-scale sustainability programs in the United States.

Our recycling and waste bins were made from used plastic milk jugs and solar energy. Our sustainability team works with show management to reduce event waste, this collaboration has helped reduce waste by 53% since 2004.

Reclaimed water is used to irrigate our 400-acre campus. Our award-winning landscape is home to a variety of plant life and adheres to the principles of Florida Friendly Landscaping. These principles include reducing stormwater runoff, attracting wildlife and using water efficiently. In addition to our landscape, innovative stormwater treatments are used on campus and redirected to natural waterbodies.

Since flipping the switch, our solar projects have offset over 16,000 tons of CO2, the equivalent to taking 700 cars off the road for 5 years. One of five renewable energy technologies, our 6,000-panel rooftop solar array is one of the largest municipally-owned solar arrays in the country. Its size spans nearly four football fields!

2,000 square feet of vertical aeroponic structures grow fresh herbs and vegetables in an efficient, chemical-free environment. Located in the Westwood Lobby, the Center-to-Table Gardens consist of 81 towers, each with 44 planting spots, allowing for over 3,500 plants to grow at any given time. All of the plants grown are used in the meals made by our food service providers, Centerplate.

Five pedestrian bridges connect directly to our convention center and four surrounding hotels. Walkability to your event saves time, energy and money. The Convention Center District is always improving and finding more efficient ways to get attendees to their event. There are also several transportation options throughout the Convention Center District. Pedicabs, Lynx bus and the I-RIDE Trolley are available for you to utilize during your stay, helping you reduce your carbon footprint.
